The Nintendo Switch is a video game console and handheld hybrid system which was released on March 3, 2017, and directly superseded the Nintendo WiiU. I purchased the Nintendo Switch about 1 year after it was released and have been pleased with the purchase ever since. I will go over The Nintendo Switch features in this article.
About Nintendo Switch
As mentioned the Nintendo Switch is a video game console and handheld built into one unit. This means it can be connected to your TV (Dock mode) and also operate as a handheld device (Handheld mode) and switch between these to modes seamlessly, hence the name. The Nintendo Switch currently retails for $300 USD in the United States and has not seen a price drop since its release.
The system has approximately sold 30 million units and its customer base is still growing. When a Nintendo Switch is purchased, the following is received in the package.
- 1 Nintendo Switch System
- 1 dock
- 1 HDMI cable
- 2 joy cons
- 1 joy con grip
- 2 joy con straps
The dock mode of the Nintendo Switch means it connected to a TV or output device such as a projector. In this mode the Nintendo Switch give out a 1080p resolution and the system can be controlled using the joy cons which comes with the system or can be purchased; or a pro controller. Original Nintendo made pro controllers can be purchased but third party controllers which are licensed by Nintendo can be purchased as well. The ability to switch from dock mode to handheld mode is as simple as taking the system itself out of the dock.
Handheld mode operates or is similar a tablet with controllers stuck to the sides. Sounds cheesy but is very effective. The joy cons slide
onto the sides of the system and it looks like a genuine handheld device. In this mode the system reason at 720p but the images are very crisp due to the size of the screen. From this mode the device can be placed back into the dock or be used in table-top mode.
Table Top Mode
This mode is useful when there is no TV and you would prefer not to have the device in your hands. The system has a kick stand in the back which allows you to rest it and use on a table-top, while in this mode you can use many options to control the device.
- 1 joy con
- 1 pair of joy cons
- Pro controller (Original or third party)
Tabletop allows for a better way to play multiplayer games when there is not a bigger screen to connect the dock into.
I have mentioned the controllers a lot, this is a very cool Nintendo Switch feature. The ability to use 1 half of the pair of joy cons as one controller. In essence the system comes with two controllers, something no other system does right out of the box. The Joy cons itself has many features such as
- Bluetooth technology – to be able to connect to the Nintendo switch
- HD rumble
- IR pointer
- NFC Reader
- Gyro motion controls
- Game capture button
The Nintendo switch pro controller has all the same features but is shaped like a traditional video game console controller. The joy cons however should not be taken likely as the can slide into the joy con grip and operate as smaller version of a standard video game controller.
Nintendo is not only known for the hardware they produce but also the software and the awesome games are a dime a dozen on the video game platform. Here are a few exclusive top-notch games, just to name a few:
- Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild
- Super Mario Odyssey
- Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu & Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee
- Super Smash Bros Ultimate
- Pokken Tournament DX
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Xenoblode Chronicles 2
- Kirby Star Allies
- Super Mario Party
Here are a few third party games for the Nintedo Switch:
- Wolfenstien 2
- Doom 2016
- Rocket League
- NBA 2k19
- FIFA 2019
- Fast RMX
- Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle
- Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
The Nintendo switch also has a plethora of indie titles namely:
- Dead Cells
- Enter the Gungeon
- Hyper Light Drifter
- Any many many more
My experience with the Nintendo Switch has been great, it is a very convenient piece of hardware that allows you to play anywhere and even on a big screen when you so feel like it. The joy cons which appear small fit into my giant hands nicely. The fact that the joy cons can operate as two controllers is also super convenient considering you would not want to carry an extra controller around. This console has literally brought me back into the gaming scene and I probably would have not owned a video game console if not for this very lovely system.
- The system is very convenient can be played on the go away from home, at home or both, which ever you prefer
- The system come with a pair of joy cons which can double up as two controllers
- The system benefits from Nintendo exclusive games which over the years has for the most part been great
- The system has a food array of third party games and indie games
