Why Should I Buy this?
First of all, GameCube controllers are usually expensive, from the release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii which was the first system after the GameCube to give Gamecube controller support. These controllers became hot commodity due to is rarity and the fact that it is a classic.
Since then there have been two Smash Bros. releases, this being super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS and not Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. With both versions making Nintendo enable GameCube Controller Support through GameCube controller adapters.
With each release of a Smash Bros. Game since then, Nintendo has release new set of Nintendo GameCube controllers with the Super Smash Bros. logo, to illustrate this is how this controller in mainly used. However, when this was done for the Nintendo Wii U, the GameCube adapter and the controller could have only been used with Super Smash Bros. but for the Nintendo Switch, this controller can be used with any other game.
So back to the question, why should you get this, main reason as stated many times above, Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Although the game can be enjoyed with a single joy-con, two joy-cons in a joy-con grip or even a pro controller, the GameCube controller was created for the purpose of playing Super Smash Bros. and give the best overall experience and feel to most that is, especially those who play competitively.
The other factor is that these controllers are here to stay and have great resale value, the prices of the controllers are usually well above these and are only going to go up as time passes. The price of a used controller may be the price of getting a new one currently. So buying one early would not hurt.
These controllers tend to be sold out very quickly and at the time of this article is already sold out in many places. With Super Smash Bros. Ultimate being the fastest selling fighting game to date and many persons playing the game this way, it only makes sense that these have sold out.
Other than this controller there are also many other iterations that third parties have created both wired and wireless that maybe more your preference or feel, but most very similarly resemble the GameCube controller.
What’s included in the Package
The package includes just the controller and a manual which is not really needed, the controller needs an adapter sold separately to work, there are wired adapters and wireless adapters.
Is it worth it
This controller is worth it and even at a slightly higher price, therefore at the current price, these are very much worth it. Secondly the fact that these can be used to play other games are more of a bargain that Nintendo Wii U owners did not get.
- Feels exactly like the GameCube controller released in 2001
- Compared to previous releases the price is lower
- Can be used to play games outside of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
- Durable controller
- Comes with rumble which works with all adapters used
- Smash Emblem on controller (that’s just me)
- Comes in different colors (black and white)
- Adapters enable four controllers to connect
- Needs an adapter to work which cost extra
- Some adapters only allow play in docked mode
- Missing Buttons (home and capture, but worst of all and ZL button)
- ZL, ZR, L and R buttons are in a different layout than Switch’s pro controller
All I can cay is great, mainly because I enjoy Super Smash Bros. this way the best, I have tried the joy-cons and the button layout just does not work for me and makes me a step slower. The price was worth it, and I have had no issues with this controller. This controller has actually fell on a hard tile flow many times and has shown no signs of getting hit or any rattling sounds from something breaking. Connects to the switch quickly with little hassle.
Reasons for verdict
The man reason for my verdict is mainly because an adapter is needed to use this controller. It loses some points for the missing buttons but this is hardly an issue outside of the Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild that uses every single button. The controller is self has beaten the test of time being released in 2001 and almost two decades later still being a fan favorite and hot seller. This controller is great and in my opinion a must have if you own Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
