What exactly does this do?

This adapter converts wired GameCube controllers and classic edition NES, SNES, SFC, Wii controllers into a wireless controller that can connect to the Nintendo Switch.

It enables the Switch to read these controllers as a pro controller. Since most of these controllers do not have a home button, it comes with a home button and also includes a power, sync and pair button. Furthermore, this has as a built in toggle that allows you to connect to your Switch and X-input capable software on Windows.

Nintendo Gamecube Controller Adapter Switch

Although it is mentioned that this controller can convert many types of controllers, many persons may end up using this on a Nintendo GameCube controller due to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s release and the fact that the Smash Bros. series of games plays best with the Nintendo GameCube controller.

The GameCube controller was released alongside the GameCube in 2001 and although Super Smash Bros. can be played with joy-cons and the Nintendo Switch’s pro controller, the GameCube controller was actually made for the purpose of playing Super Smash Bros. At the time it was Super Smash Bros. Melee, but since then every smash from Brawl to Wii U/3Ds to Ultimate plays great with this controller.

Remember this enables the Switch to read the controllers as a pro controller and you can therefore play any game with this. With that in mind be careful as all these controllers do not all have all the buttons the Nintendo Switch’s pro controller have, so for example if you are playing Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild with the GameCube controller connected to this you will have no ZL button and will not be able to do all commands, however for other games which does not utilize all the buttons, you will be fine.

Components and What they Do?

Out of the box this comes with the converter itself, USB code, a Velcro strap and manual, with the USB code needed to update the firmware this uses. The strap is used to wrap the controller wires as the controller pin goes into this adapter and the Switch reads this wirelessly. This is basically all you really need except 2 AA batteries to get this working and have you enjoying you experience

Pros

  1. Lightweight and not clunky.
  2. Very easy to set up and connect to the Switch.
  3. Creates no noticeable lag.
  4. Supports controller Rumble

Cons

  1. Needs 2 AA batteries to work instead of having a built in rechargeable battery.
  2. Only works on one controller.
  3. Cannot turn the Nintendo Switch on, would still need the joy-cons for this

My Experience

I purchased this the same time I purchased Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, along with a GameCube controller, rechargeable AA batteries and the charger. I opted for the very cheap ones but any you like would work just fine.

I currently have no issues with any of these products and love the fact that I can play with a GameCube controller as I am a hug Super Smash Bros. fan and this is my preferred way of playing. Further, to this is, when I do not want to play in docked mode and I just want to get a game in, I can do this easily and still have the preferred controller experience I want and not have to play with the joy-cons. Don’t get me wrong the joy-cons are awesome but for this specific game I prefer the GameCube controller.

Reasons for Verdict

I gave this a 9 out of 10 simply because I deducted half points for the first two cons above and the third con does not necessarily affect a lot of persons. The first con for some maybe worth more than a half point deduction but to me this is not as significant as the battery life is good and AA rechargeable batteries and not very expensive, nor is the charger for this rechargeable batteries.

Secondly although Nintendo is trying to recreate the co-op experience, a lot of persons are playing online and a GameCube converter which converts four controllers at once may not be necessary. The trade off for this is that the converter works in all the Switch’s modes, that is docked, handheld and table-top, while other adapters work only when docked.

Lastly this works with original GameCube controllers from all the way back in 2001, controllers made for Super Smash Bros. Wii U and recently made controllers for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Since the original feel of Nintendo made controllers are the best, most times it is better to get an original GameCube controller other than a third party one, it being wired even means that if you do join tournaments with your controllers, you can connect using this or the wired adapters which all tournaments have standard.
